Henry County Sheriff Monte Belew has been named the new University of Tennessee at Martin Director of Public Safety, according to a university press release.

Belew will be responsible for providing students, faculty and staff an orderly and safe campus. The release says he will also direct crime prevention activities.

"My number-one goal is the safety and security for everyone at UTM, and I want to continue making UTM a great place to be," Belew said in a statement.

Belew is a UTM criminal justice graduate, according to the release, and he has served as Henry County sheriff since 2006. He also served as a Tennessee State Trooper and as a patrolman, school resource officer and teacher for the Jackson Police Department.
