Vaping crisis in Tennessee and reactions

Health officials have reported Tennessee's first death from a vaping-related respiratory illness. Nashville health officials yesterday confirmed the adult male's death amid a national outbreak of vaping-related illnesses, including 53 cases reported in Tennessee.

State Health Commissioner Lisa Piercey recommended that Tennesseans consider stopping e-cigarette use and vaping while illness are investigated.

WKRN reports that a key Tennessee state lawmaker is planning another push next year to raise the age for buying and using tobacco products from 18 years old to 21.

Health is the focus of the bill, but some state departments will be affected if the measure passes. The opposition raises concern about a decrease in tax money raised from tobacco purchases and the potential negative impact on tobacco farmers.

This bill would also include raising the age from 18-to-21 for purchasing vaping products.
