ABOUT WUTM

WUTM is the student broadcast voice of the University of Tennessee at Martin. Our station offers a variety of music, including top 100 hits from country to hip-hop, as well as news and weather. Our staff hosts weekly radio shows including The Bench (sports talk), SGA Roundup, All Things Greek and For the Record (campus news).

 

The primary purpose of this radio station is to provide a broadcast facility that will meet the needs of the university community and the public. With the comprehensive needs of the locality as the guide, the objective of this station is to provide well-rounded informational, intellectual, educational, and cultural offerings. This station provides educational opportunities for students which they might not otherwise have access to. By providing programming of diverse interests, this station serves the educational and communication needs of the entire community. By providing programming which emphasizes recent developments in various disciplines, this station serves to aid in the renewal of knowledge essential to a vital intellectual climate.

 

MISSION STATEMENT:

 

The mission statement of WUTM is to train students at The University of Tennessee at Martin in the field of radio broadcasting while serving the public in both the academic and outlying communities.

Jillianne Moncrief

Program Director

Jillianne Moncrief, of McLemoresville,  is a senior communications major with a sequence in broadcast production. She is the program committee chair fro RTDNA, a member of Phi Eta Sigma, and a staff writer for The Pacer. After graduation she hopes to start a career in TV production or radio.

Emma Bruner

Business & Traffic  Director

Emma Bruner is senior Public Relations major with a Marketing minor from Martin, Tennessee. She is a member of the Public Relations Student Society of America, Women in Communications, and Undergraduate Alumni Council. She also served as a SOAR Staff member with UT Martin Admissions. After graduation, she plans to work for a Public Relations firm.

John Thornton

Sports Director

John Thornton is the Sports Director. He is senior Broadcasting major from Atoka, Tennessee. He co-hosts the sports talk show, The Bench and broadcasts Skyhawk athletic events for WUTM. Upon graduation, John plans to pursue a job the sports broadcasting. 

Jessica Davis

Support & Development Director

Jessica is a Communications major focusing in Public Relations with a minor in Psychology. She is also a member of PRSSA and Undergraduate Alumni Council. When she graduates, Jessica plans to move to Nashville to attend law school and pursue a career in entertainment & sports.

ADVISORS & FACULTY

Dr.Richard Robinson

Faculty Advisor

Dr. Robinson teaches courses in radio broadcasting and public speaking. He worked in the radio industry for 19 years, including roles as an on-air talent, news reporter, and sales and programming. He also worked in government public relations in the state of Arkansas for 14 years. Robinson holds a bachelor of science journalism from the University of Central Arkansas, a master of arts in journalism (radio-television-film) from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and a Ph.D. in mass communication and media arts from Southern Illinois University Carbondale.​

Dr.Robert Nanney

Department Chair

Dr. Nanney serves as department chair with 15 years’ experience in print journalism as a reporter, photographer, and managing editor. He has won several teaching awards including the Outstanding Teaching Award by the UT National Alumni Association and has been a faculty member with the TN Governor’s School for the Humanities for 20 years. He is co-founder of the department’s Media Design sequence. His research specialty is community journalism, and his creative activity involves photojournalism and desktop publishing. He is immediate past president of the UTM Faculty Senate. He holds numerous committee assignments, including the Tennessee Press Association Journalism Committee and the National Association of Schools of Journalism and Mass Communication’s Contemporary Leadership Committee.

Kayla Brooks

News Director

Kayla is a junior broadcast communications student from Dickson, TN. She is the host of WUTM's weekly show, For the Record. She is a yoga instructor at the Student Recreation Center, and she is a member of Letters in Motion and RTDNA. After graduation, she plans to work as a reporter.

Mr.Rodney Freed

Instructor

Mr. Freed has worked in the television industry for over 10 years and was most recently the Director of Production at WBBH-TV (NBC) and WZVN-TV (ABC) in Ft. Myers, Fl. He also actively works with the local PBS affiliate WLJT-TV as a freelance director for the student chapter of the Broadcasting Guild. He holds memberships in the National Press Photographers Association and the Society of Broadcast Engineers.

Brian Thomas Qualls

Senior Broadcast Engineer

Skilled in many aspects of the broadcast industry, Mr. "Thomas" has been a broadcaster in both radio and television for over 20 years in the West Tennessee and Southwest Kentucky markets. He has served in Disc Jockey, Engineering, Digital Director and Operations Manager positions for over a decade in radio. In television, Qualls has produced newscasts, served as reporter, videographer, and engineer, produced television ads, and has been a technical director for local television programs. Brian holds certifications in both on-air and digital advertising from the Radio Advertising Bureau. Mr. Qualls is an amateur radio operator and Skywarn storm spotter. He continues his on-air work tracking storms for listeners during severe weather at WUTM and at other local radio stations in the Ken-Tenn area.
